The base of the roadway is complete, but until the asphalt overlay is placed on top of the base, temporary traffic control devices will be in place to prevent drivers from using the unfinished lane.  Construction crews plan to begin removing the temporary barrier tonight, Tuesday, May 14, and completing the process Wednesday night, May 15. This work will require a single-lane closure of eastbound U.S. Route 54 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night. Crews will also restripe the roadway to two 12-foot lanes. Once these pieces are complete, the width restriction and reduced speed for the construction will be lifted.  In mid-summer, crews will resurface this section of eastbound U.S. Route 54 and complete the asphalt overlay on the newly constructed third lane. This is expected to be complete in late summer.  Crews will then restripe the roadway from West Main Street to the U.S. Route 63 interchange to include:  Two lanes for eastbound U.S. Route 54.  One lane dedicated to northbound U.S. Route 63.  The auxiliary lane to Route W (Airport Road).  That resurfacing work is one component of an overarching effort to improve the pavement on east and westbound U.S. Route 54 from the Missouri River Bridges to just north of Kingdom City. The pavement improvements for the full stretch of road will be completed in 2025.   All work is weather-permitting, and schedules are subject to change.  The most up-to-date traffic restrictions and information about the work taking place along the busy U.S. Route 54 corridor in Jefferson City can be found at www.modot.org/guide-us-route-54-improvement-projects-jefferson-city.  MoDOT asks all motorists to work with us by buckling up, putting your phone down, obeying all traffic signs, and slowing down and moving over in work zones.    For more information about MoDOT projects, traffic updates, or other transportation-related matters, please visit our Traveler Information Map at http://traveler.modot.org/ or call our 24-hour Customer Service Center at 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (275-6636).
